My sons birthday. What to give him. He is glorious; I’ve loved him since before I was born. I have not one red cent to my name. I can make pictures so I started this one intended to be a BIG bed spread since he is a big presence to me and to anyone who knows him. He doesn’t have much wall space. His son, my brilliant grandson grows sunflowers. Put it all together- son flowers. Huge brilliant son flowers in a large presence.
I have never accomplished a large format art work that is pure paint created as with the wall as an easel. I am reminded of the works of my fellow student friends at San Francisco Art Institute. It was the time when abstract expressionism was segueing into neo realism which was abstract expressionism with recognizable subjects. Most of these works were large format or very large format. The philosophy was that paint was to be applied by action, brush stroke action of the arms and body.
I painted Son Flower this way and discovered another aspect to action painting - it’s an athletic event.
with all that big arm painting, I got something like Tennis Elbow which is when the Ulnar nerve is pinched. In my case the ulnar nerves coming from the funny bone to finger tips. The result is can’t move my hands or arms. Proof, notice the faces. They aren’t finished.
